How to Erase Mini DV Tapes

by Brandon Getty

Though there are more technologically advanced ways of recording a promotional commercial or instructional training video for your business, it's comforting to have a physical record of the footage on a mini DV cassette tape. If you're trying to keep your production budget low, you can reuse old mini DV tapes. Instead of recording over the existing footage, it's a good idea to erase the tape completely prior to filming.

1. Locate the "Record/Save" tab on the side edge of your mini DV tape. This tab is typically red, green or blue depending on the manufacturer of the tape. Switch the tab to the right using your fingernail to engage "Record" mode.

2. Insert the tape into your camcorder.

3. Activate the camera's "Playback" mode. Press the "Rewind" button and allow the tape to rewind completely.

4. Switch the camera to "Record" mode. Place the lens cap over the front of the camera's lens. Press the red button to begin recording.

5. Allow the the camera to record over the entire tape. This will replace all existing footage with darkness and replicate a new, unused tape.

6. Rewind the tape back to the beginning if the camera does not do it automatically. Repeat the above steps for each tape you wish to erase.
